Systems Biology & Epigenetics

Systems biology helps us understand why cells respond to environmental change, by analysing complex interactions among genes, proteins, metabolites and feedback loops. Epigenetics, in turn, explains how the environment can influence gene activity and leave a biological memory of earlier experience, without changing the DNA sequence. Through years of scientific work I studied how plants respond to environmental stress, their adaptive mechanisms and the interdependencies of cellular processes. That knowledge shaped my approach to the skin as a dynamic system, in which the epidermal barrier, the microbiome, metabolism and renewal continually act on one another. At BOGDAO we use this perspective to design formulas deliberately — in which what matters is not only a single ingredient, but also its interactions with every other element of the system.

WHY EMULSIFIERS MATTER

Formulated in our own laboratory.

In the BOGDAO laboratory, we believe a formula’s efficacy depends not only on the presence of active ingredients, but on how they are combined and delivered to the skin.

Texture is not merely the pleasure of application. It is an integral part of formulation technology.

Emulsifiers do far more than bind water and oil. They shape the microstructure of an emulsion, its stability, the distribution of actives, and how those actives are released and interact with the epidermis. A well-designed emulsifying system can also influence the penetration of selected actives into the skin.

That is why, in our laboratory, we analyse and test different emulsifying systems, the ratios of lipid and water phases, and the rheological properties of our formulas. We choose emulsifiers so they work with the actives, support their stability, and deliver optimal application properties.

Every BOGDAO texture is the result of conscious formulation decisions — from light, fast-spreading emulsions to rich lipid structures that support comfort and the protection of the skin barrier.

We do not follow the concentration of an active alone. Equally important is the environment in which that ingredient functions, its stability, and its availability to the skin.

THE SCIENCE OF SKIN pH

PEEL SOLUTION 01 & 02 — intelligent skin renewal.

Effective exfoliation is not about aggressive peeling. It is about precisely supporting the physiological processes of epidermal renewal.

The surface of healthy skin is naturally slightly acidic, typically around pH 4.5–5.5. This environment plays a significant role in the activity of enzymes responsible for barrier maturation, lipid metabolism, desquamation and microbiome balance.

With age, skin pH may rise, and its ability to regenerate, retain water and desquamate properly changes. At the same time, cellular renewal slows, which can lead to uneven texture, dryness and a loss of radiance.

Appropriately chosen acids support the regulation of keratinisation and the removal of excess corneocytes. Some acids, at specific concentrations and conditions of use, may also influence the structure of the living epidermal layers and processes in the dermis.

Exfoliating the stratum corneum does not mean thinning the skin as a whole. Studies on selected AHA acids have shown that controlled exfoliation can be associated with an increase in the thickness of the living epidermal layers and an improvement in selected structural parameters.

At BOGDAO we developed two PEEL SOLUTION formulas whose action is based on combining mild polyhydroxy acids (PHA) with ingredients that support hydration, the epidermal barrier and skin comfort.

PEEL SOLUTION 01

A formula based on lactobionic acid and gluconolactone — two PHA acids whose properties allow gentle exfoliation to be combined with a hydrating effect.

Niacinamide supports barrier function, helps regulate sebum and improve evenness of tone. Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate, a derivative of glycyrrhizic acid, and panthenol support the soothing of irritation and skin comfort.

Ferulic acid adds antioxidant properties to the formula.

PEEL SOLUTION 01 was designed for skin that needs gentle renewal, especially skin prone to imperfections, uneven texture and excessive reactivity.

PEEL SOLUTION 02

An advanced formula combining lactobionic acid and gluconolactone with Potassium Azeloyl Diglycinate — a water-soluble derivative of azelaic acid.

This ingredient supports sebum regulation, more even tone and the care of skin with imperfections.

Trehalose and glycerin help maintain proper epidermal hydration, while inulin supports an environment favourable to microbiome balance. Panthenol completes the formula, supporting comfort and the protective barrier.

Ferulic acid provides additional antioxidant support.

PEEL SOLUTION 02 combines controlled epidermal renewal with care aimed at uneven tone, texture and signs of skin ageing.

WHY GENTLE EXFOLIATION MATTERS

Overly intense exfoliation can disrupt the epidermal barrier, increase transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and lead to irritation.

That is why BOGDAO’s philosophy is based on a conscious choice of acids, their concentrations and formulation parameters, rather than pursuing maximum peeling intensity.

Mild PHA acids allow a gradual improvement in skin texture to be combined with hydrating properties, making them valuable in care that requires high tolerance.

It is not about exfoliating more. It is about supporting skin renewal without unnecessarily compromising the protective barrier.
